Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Feijoa (Feijoa sellowiana) Leaves
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Objectives: Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) technique has been studied for extraction of bioactive compounds from Feijoa sellowiana leaves. Results were compared with those obtained from conventional ethanolic extraction (CE). Materials and Methods: Results: The best supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction conditions was determined as 250 bar of pressure, 50 °C of temperature, and 90 min dynamic extraction time. Under these conditions, the crude extraction yield (CEY) of bioactive compounds was 38.14 ± 0.17 mg g-1. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed that the extract possesses strong radical scavenging activity (78.18 ± 0.12%, 74.19 ± 0.14%, 49.38 ± 0.18% inhibition of DPPH˙, ABTS˙+, and OH˙, respectively). The HPLC analysis revealed that gallic acid, catechin, rutin, ferulic acid, apigenin, and quercetin are the major phenolic compounds present in the extract. The CEY obtained using the best conditions of SCE process was around 70% of those obtained with CE. However, the quality of extracts regarding radical scavenging activity and bioactive phenolic content was higher than those obtained by CE. Conclusions: F. sellowiana leave is a potential source of bioactive compounds with strong radical scavenging activity and the SC-CO2 extraction can be considered as a green technique to extract bioactive compounds.

This study was conducted to determine Feijoa genotypes grown within seedling population in Sakarya region. In the study, approximately 300 Feijoa plants were surveyed. In these plants, 28 genotypes were labelled and evaluated. Phenological and pomological researches on these genotypes were made for two years. As a result of this study, 16 Feijoa genotypes were selected according to the weighted...
full textIdenti®cation of Feijoa sellowiana Berg accessions by RAPD markers
Random ampli®ed polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) were used to discriminate among 25 Feijoa sellowiana cultivars and accessions. Fifty ten-mer oligonucleotide primers were tested on ®ve accessions. Twenty-two primers, showing clear polymorphic patterns, were chosen to amplify the DNAs of all 25 genotypes; each ampli®cation was repeated three times separately. Only 11 primers were ®nally analysed, yieldi...

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO(2)) extraction of bioactive compounds including flavonoids and phenolics from Ampelopsis grossedentata stems was carried out. Extraction parameters such as pressure, temperature, dynamic time and modifier, were optimized using an orthogonal array design of L(9) (3(4)), and antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl ...
full textSupercritical fluid extraction of bioactive compounds from sunflower leaves: comparison of analytical and pilot-scale extraction
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) from natural products has been widely studied as an alternative to the use of traditional techniques in the production of bioactive compounds. It has been demonstrated that this process is particularly useful when treating thermolabile compounds and solvent pollution has to be avoided. SFE can be applied to systems of different scales, from analytical scale,...
